THE DNIEPR-DON FOREST STEPPE AS AN ETHNO-CONTACT ZONE: RUSSIA, THE CRIMEAN KHANATE AND THE POLISH-LITHUANIAN COMMONWEALTH
Journal Title: Tractus aevorum: эволюция социокультурных и политических пространств - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
The article deals with the process of Russia`s state territory expansion in the XVIth century. The contradictions between Russia, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Crimean Khanate caused by tense fight for domination in the Dnepr-Don forest-steppe are analyzed. The author comes to conclusion that the contradictions and competitions resulted not only in attaining certain territories by the countries in question, but also in their gaining valuable experience of both inter-state and borderland population interaction which then paved the way for effective mechanisms of co-existence of Russia` s and the Commonwealth`s subjects on the contested territories.
