The Educational Activity and Scientific Heritage of Julian Niedzwiedzki (1845–1918)

Abstract
Based on the analysis of archival sources, Julian Medvedski’s studies at the Przemysl German Gymnasium were studied. Despite successful training, the future Ukrainian professor took an active part in Ukrainian student life. The creation of the “Hromada” in Przemysl was the beginning of the dissemination of the ideas of the modern Ukrainian nation. The symbol of this is the cult of Taras Shevchenko. Julian Medvedsky continued his studies at the University of Vienna. At first he studied at the theological, and later at the philosophical faculty. His teachers were eminent geologists Eduard Suess and Gustav Tschermak, with whom the Ukrainian scientist maintained relations after graduation. In parallel, he actively participated in the founding of the Ukrainian society “Sich” in Vienna, which opposed the Russophile party. During the Viennese period, J. Medvedski conducted active scientific activities, including geological expeditions to the Austrian Alps. Moving to Lviv did not interfere with J. Medvedsky’s continuation of scientific activity. The formation of J. Medvedski as a scientist and teacher of the Higher Technical School (Polytechnic school) in Lviv is analyzed. He explored the Eastern Carpathians, salt deposits in Bochnia, Velichka, Kalush, deposits of native sulfur. For significant scientific achievements, Julian Medvedski was elected the first rector-ukrainian educational institution in Lviv. In parallel, the Ukrainian professor participated in the work of the Ukrainian society “Prosvita”, in particular, was in the leadership of the society. He was also one of the founders of the Taras Shevchenko Society. The absence of Ukrainian scientific societies encouraged J. Medvedski to participate in the activities of Polish societies, such as the Polish Society of Naturalists named N. Copernicus in Lviv, Academy of Sciences in Krakow. Recognition of achievements of the prominent Ukrainian was his awarding the title doctor honoris causa of the Higher Technical School and a number of state awards.
