THE EFFECT OF AN ADDITIVE ON THE WEAR OF THE NODES WORKING IN A MIXED LUBRICATION AREA

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 244, Issue 4

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the experimental work on the modification of the operating conditions of working nodes using three preparations: two that create ceramic layers on the surfaces of elements and one modifying the surface layer by chemical reaction. Investigations were carried out using a standard four-ball extreme pressure tester. Specimens were lubricated with Castrol Magnatec Diesel 10W-40 without additives (as basic oil) and with Castrol Magnatec Diesel 10W-40 with the addition of preparations of 10% or 0.1% by volume. To assess the lubrication efficiency of the tested compositions, three criteria were used (limit load Fg, limit wear load index Goz, and wear characteristic as the function of load d = f(F)). Comparative quantities were taken from the Polish standard PN-76/C-04147 „The tests of properties of oils and greases”. The results were statistically handled at a confidence level of 95% using Student’s t-test. After assessing the working efficiency of tested additives in Castrol Magnatec Diesel 10W-40 oil, a favourable reaction was noticed but improvements of determined quantities fundamentally depends on test materials. It was found that the additives are not always cost effective.
