THE EFFECT OF CHANGES IN THE GROUNDWATER LEVEL CAUSED BY FLOOD IN THE VISTULA RIVER ON THE ZONING IN THE WARSAW AREA

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2011, Vol 446, Issue 446

Abstract

The article presents the impact of lengthy heavy rain and flood levels of rivers on the rising groundwater level in areas of uplands and river terraces of the Vistula in Warsaw. The rising of groundwater level caused numerous problems at construction sites, as well as during the use of underground parts of buildings, which also affected the foundation and drainage work quality. Attention has been drawn to small water courses and channels, which can flood nearby fields after a torrential rain. This problem was discussed on the example of an office building located in Warsaw, which until after the flood was protected from a similar case in the future. The cases presented in the article helped to formulate the conclusions regarding the impact of groundwater on the underground levels of buildings, based on experience gained during several decades of professional practice.
