The effect of diameter and distance of the additional holes on the fatigue life of a single hole specimen containing hole edge cracks

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 10, Issue 1

Abstract

A series of finite element specimens were developed and tested in ASTM-A395 elastic perfectly-plastic ductile cast iron of single hole specimens containing hole edge cracks. The Abaqus finite element package was used to modeling. The Abaqus data file for the uncracked mesh was read and processed by Zencrack fracture mechanics code. The energy release rate was used to drive crack growth calculations. This paper describes the improvement of the fatigue life of single hole specimens by variations in diameter and vertical distance of the additional holes. The effect of the reduction of stress concentration around the basic single hole on the fatigue life of the single hole specimens was discussed. The result shows that fatigue life could be extended by applying additional holes of larger diameter and decreased by increasing the vertical distance. Consecutively, the results from the numerical predictions were compared with experimental data.
