THE EFFECT OF MAGNETIC PARTICLE CONCENTRATION ON THE FERROFLUID LUBRICITY

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 244, Issue 4

Abstract

The subject of the author’s research, whose results are presented in this article, are the chosen properties of ferrofluid. The author assumes that the concentration of magnetic particles in ferrofluid may significantly affect the basic properties of the ferrofluid like: density, dynamic viscosity, or lubricity, as well as flow and operating parameters of journal bearings lubricated with ferrofluids. The purpose of this paper is to present the impact of the concentration of magnetic particles in the ferrofluid on its lubricity. Experimental investigations were performed on the four-ball T-02U tester, and the tested ferrofluid was a mixture of colloidal mineral motor oil SAE 15W-40 with Fe3O4 magnetic particles and the surfactant. This work is part of a wider study on the analysis of changes in operating parameters of journal bearings lubricated with ferrofluids.
