THE EFFECT OF MATERIAL AND TECHNOLOGY OF SURFACE LAYER PREPARATION OF ROLLING ELEMENTS ON PITTING

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 225, Issue 3

Abstract

In the paper, the results of the effect of material type and vacuum techniques of the surface layer on fatigue wear of heavy-loaded rolling contact are presented. Various materials, 100Cr6 bearing steel, 16MnCr5 carbonised steel and 33H3MF nitriding steel as well as TiN, CrN, WC/C and MoS2 coatings have been tested. Tribosystems were lubricated with mineral reference oil without additives denoted as RL 144. Carbonising and nitriding processes show the negative effect on surface rolling contact fatigue. By the application of PVD coatings on one part (TiN, CrN, WC/C, MoS2) fatigue life was shortened. The same coatings enable the increase of scuffing resistance of coated tribosystem. Single coatings, like TiN and CrN, decrease the fatigue life tenfold, while the decease of service life for low friction coatings was only minor.
