The effect of particle size reduction of waste material on heavy metals release

Journal Title: CHEMIK nauka-technika-rynek - Year 2015, Vol 69, Issue 10

Abstract

One of the factors influencing the degree of heavy metals re- lease from industrial waste while depositing them on landfills and slag heaps are: the form in which the waste material is being sub- mitted, its shape, waste form, and the reduction ratio. The paper presents leaching of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, Ni and Cr) from metallurgical waste of grain size <4 mm, and grain size reduction to <0.125 mm. Furthermore, the level of heavy metals release from both fractions of waste by eluent with reduced pH was indicated. Higher content of lead and chromium was designated in aqueous extracts from waste fraction <0.125 mm. The effect of liquid pH on the release rate of some heavy metals was also observed.
