The effect of repeated prostate biopsies to complication rates
Journal Title: Ege Tıp Dergisi - Year 2016, Vol 55, Issue 1
Abstract
Aim: We examined the effect of repeated transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsies to complication rates. Materials and Methods: Seven hundred and ninety three patients who underwent transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsies between June 2010 and June 2014 were enrolled in the study. The patients divided into two groups: Patients who were biopsied for the first time (Group-1) and who were biopsied previously (Group-2). The complication rates were evaluated between two groups. p<0.05 values were regarded as statistically significant. Results: There were 668 patients (%84.2) in Group 1 and 125 patients (%15.8) in Group-2. Minor complication rates in Group-1 and Group-2 were %67.8 and %81.6, respectively (p=0.002). Major complication rates were %1.0 in Group-1 and %4.0 in Group-2 (p=0.013). Both results were statistically significant. Hematuria and infection rates were also statistically significant between the two groups (p=0.019 and p=0.039, respectively). Conclusion: Hematuria and infection rates increase after repeated prostate biopsies. Patients should be informed and measures should be reconsidered.
