The effect of repeated volleyball matches on the morning plasma levels of hormones, metabolites and muscle and liver enzymes in male volleyball players
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. This study was conducted to examine how specific sporting activity affects the selected morning biochemical blood indices in male volleyball players.Material and methods. 17 elite male players, members of Polish volleyball clubs participated into the Polish Volleyball League. The matches between the teams were played with the frequency of 4 matches per week, and took place in various places. Each volleyball team consisted of 12 players, 6 currently engaged in a match , and 6-reserve ones. During successive games these subgroups had to override themselves to avoid accumulation of fatigue. Thus, a player did not participate in the each match of the league, moreover, his time of a game was vary. Before the beginning of the League and after its end from all the players resting blood, in fast condition was taken from elbow vein. Plasma cortisol (C), testosterone (T), T/C *100 ratio, total protein (TP), glucose (G), urea (U), total billirubin (TB) and five enzymes, CK, GOT, GPT, GGT, ALP were determined. Results. Seven parameters: C, T/C*100, G, U, CK, GPT, TP demonstrated changes induced by increased sporting activity. The most relative rise was found for CK activity (+68.2%) and the most relative drop for T/C*100 (-23.1%). Interestingly, also levels glucose and total protein were higher after the league, likely, due to higher consumption of protein-carbohydrate supplements. Conclusions. Participation in the volleyball league resulted in the moderated changes in several blood indices. These changes might be modified by the enrichment of the diet by nutritional supplements.
