THE EFFECT OF SOLVENTS ON THE KINETICS OF CIS-TRANS ISOMERIZATION OF SELECTED AROMATIC AZO COMPOUNDS

Abstract
The data on rate constants of cis-transisomerization of selected aromatic azo compounds in different solvents are summarized using linear multiparameter equation: lgk = a0 + a1f(n2) + a2f(ε) + a3B + a4Ет + a5δ2 + а6Vм , considering specific and non-specific solvation as well as influence of different structural factors. The correlation equations, representing the relationship between reaction rate and solvent properties at different temperatures were analyzed: lgk25 = –6.3650 + (9.0495 ± 1.0416)f(n2) – (0.0097 ± 0.0009) δ2 + (0.0691 ± 0.0117)Eт R = 0.9854; s ± 0.0439 and lgk45 = –5.3342 + (8.0411 ± 1.1280)f(n2) + (0.0527 ± 0.0127)Eт – (0.0072 ± 0.0009)δ2 R = 0.9678; s ± 0.0475. In both cases (at temperatures 25 and 45 °C), polarization and electrophilicity accelerate the process, whereas cohesive energy of medium makes it more sluggish.
