THE EFFECT OF TEXTURING BOTH SURFACES IN REGULAR AND IRREGULAR ARRAYS ON FRICTION FORCE

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2014, Vol 257, Issue 5

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the tribological effects of texturing both surfaces of a friction pair. Oil pockets were made with the use of abrasive jet machining. Tests were carried out using a pin-on-disc machine in unidirectional sliding, the normal force was 20 N, and the sliding speed was 0.4 m/s. Before each test, one drop of lubricant (about 0.08 ml) was supplied to the inlet side of the contact zone. Tested discs made from 42CrMo4 steel of 50 HRC hardness were polished and textured by abrasive jet machining. Oil pockets had a diameter 300 mm and a depth of 10 mm, with a 5% area ratio. Dimples were positioned in one irregular and four regular arrays. Discs co-acted with smaller textured disc (counterspecimen) from the same material, with a hardness of 40 HRC. The oil pockets on the counter-specimen surface, arranged evenly in a rectangular array, had a diameter of 500 mm, a depth of 5 mm, and a pit-area ratio of 20%. The study indicated the negative effect of texturing both surfaces, which cause an increase in friction. Surface texturing of only one surface, stationary or moving, can be beneficial to the tribological performance of sliding pairs, causing a decrease in friction force.
