The Effect of the Reading Circle Method on Understanding Skills

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the reading circle’s effect on the understanding skills of the seventh-grade students of the secondary school. The study group of the study consists of seventh - grade students of middle school who are studying in the city of Etimesgut in the province of Ankara in the academic year of 2015 - 2016. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 117 students in 2 experimental groups and 2 control groups. Of these students, 58 are in the experiment and 59 are in the control group. The application lasted 5.5 months (22 weeks). The lessons are based on the Turkish teaching curriculum in the experimental group, in addition to the reading circle method, which is a new strategy; in the control groups, the lessons are only based on the Turkish Teaching Curriculum. The students are directed to read in the program’s way. According to pre - test and post - test application results, the ability of comprehension in the experimental group increased significantly compared to the control group. This increase was greater in the low-understanding comprehension skills than in the high-achieving ones.
