THE EFFECT OF WARM UP ON THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM - A PILOT STUDY

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2017, Vol 33, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction: Warm up is necessary before physical activity. It is performed to prepare to exercises and minimize the risk of injury. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of warm up exercises and warm up, sports massage on the functional limitations of the musculoskeletal system.Material and methods: The study encompassed 56 healthy women in the age 19–24 who were randomly divided into two groups. The study used the following research tools: the Functional Movement Screen Test (7 tasks: deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lounge, shoulder mobility, ASLR – active straight leg raise, trunk stability push up, rotary stability). Performance in each task is evaluated on a four-point scale, from 0 to 3 points. The first measurement was performed without warm-up. Second measurement was done after one week – after warm up with sports massage (Group 1), and traditional warm up (Group 2). The differences between the measurements were assessed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and the differences between groups were calculated with the Mann–Whitney U test. The minimal level of significance was p ≤ 0.05.Results: The study revealed that warm up minimized functional limitations – in second measurement results were significant higher in both groups (after warm up with sports massage and traditional warm up). In Group 1 significant differences were observed in hurdle step (p=0,000) and trunk stability push-up (p=0,004). In Group 2 significant difference was noted in trunk stability push-up (p=0,019).Conclusions: 1. Proper warm up can decrease functional limitation. Warm up exercises are recommended before each physical effort. 2. There were no significant differences between results of groups. Both methods can be effective in improving quality of movement.
