The epidemiology of dementia in Poland – epidemiological research review
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 8
Abstract
Introduction. The aim of this article was to determine the availability and consistency of the studies on epidemiology of dementia and cognitive disorders in Poland.Material and methods. A review of the literature on epidemiological studies published between 1990 and 2006 was conducted. Following keywords were used to search the database: “dementia”, “Alzheimer”, “cognition”, “prevalence”, “epidemiology”, “occurrence”. Analysis of the collected articles enabled overall evaluation of the current state of knowledge of the dementia disorders in Poland.Results. Articles on Polish research conducted on the epidemiology of dementia vary in terms of scope and methodology. Therefore comparison and comprehensive analysis of their results seem not to be reasonable. However, data from various studies indicate that the prevalence of dementia disorders in Poland is at a similar level as in the other European countries.Conclusions. There is a great need for a better standardization and coordination of epidemiological studies in order to improve the quality of empirical data and establish comparable results that might be generalized to the entire population.
