The ethical content of G.H. Mead’s conception of symbolic interactionism

Abstract
This article examines the original moral and ethical themes of symbolic interactionism that are staying mainly in the shadow of Mead’s social psychology and have to be elucidated. The main feature of Mead’s ethics is that it is an integral part of social theory. Its central thesis is based on the complementary character of the moral and social order. The author analyzes classical issues of normative ethics concerning Mead’s attempt to overcome the contradiction between deontological and teleological foundations. Mead did so defining morals based on pragmatic understanding of ends. It is considered Mead’s metaethical investigation of the nature and mechanism of justification of ethical judgments. Mead’s approach deals with the conflicts between different ends and values in social life. In such perspective moral agent is called to harmonize them by the rational examination.
