THE EVENTS OF JULY-AUGUST 1917 IN THE PINDUS MOUNTAINS REGION – AN ATTEMPT TO CREATE STATEHOOD TO AROMANIANS.  INEDITED DOCUMENTS AND EVIDENCE

Journal Title: Revista Romana de Studii Eurasiatice - Year 2007, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

In the summer of 1917, taking advantage of the presence of the Allied (Italian and French) troops in the Pindus Mountains, a region largely inhabited by Vlachs (Aromanians, or Balkan Romanians), some of their leaders made a bid for its statehood („the proclamation of Pindus”, „independence/autonomy”), as a canton under the protection of Italy. It was a daring, yet rather quixotic act, doomed to fail, since none of the necessary conditions had been met. Based on inedited Romanian archive documents, and lesser known evidence scattered in various publications during the interwar period, the present study attempts to reconstruct the facts of people and events of that historical moment.
