The Evolution of Television Broadcasting Rights during the Summer Olympic Games

Abstract

This study offered a historical review of Television broadcasting rights in the Summer Olympic Games since the beginning of the first signing contract (Rome 1960 Summer Olympic Games) to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games for the sale of television rights to Olympic. The methodology was attributive and library. For this purpose, required data achieved by gathering, classify and analyzing different books and articles about the Olympic movement and media. The study sample was similar to statistical population and included the International Olympic Committee (IOC), National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and Organizing Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs). The research findings showed that in Rome 1960 Summer Olympic and for the first time, 18 countries were able to watch games, alive. Until Sydney 2000 Olympic and during this period, the coverage of live broadcasting being increased and the number of territories and countries increased to 220 for the first time. After 1980 Moscow Summer Olympic Games, the revenue of TV broadcasting had a stunning spurt to $88 million; this revenue was over the last 5 periods, overall. The IOC revenue from the 2008 Beijing Olympic was about $1737 million that broke a record in Olympic history. After five evolutionary stages, share of the IOC revenue approaches to 51 percent of total revenue in Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Nowadays, TV broadcasting rights of the games changed to most important and alternative source of Olympic movement’s income, and its role being more and more critical.
