Journal Title: Гірська школа Українських Карпат - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 14

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel approach to the assessment of students using game elements, the purpose of which is to increase the motivation for academic success. Components of this approach are the following: 1) to provide information about the current progress of the student as quickly as possible («positive or negative feedback»), 2) to calculate automatically student rank among his colleagues after each classes («Leaderboard»), and 3) to award the special icons and to give associated with them bonuses for the best performance of specific tasks («badges»). Game elements were used in educational assessment during the 2012-2013 academic year in «management and marketing in pharmacy» and «computer technologies in pharmacy» disciplines which are taught to students of 4th and 5th courses of «Pharmacy» specialty. Efficiency of student motivation was evaluated from two sides: 1) the interest of students in their grades 2) overall assessment of the attitude toward the game approach. The average number of grades reporting web pages visits was used as the measure of student interest in grades. Overall student attitude to the game approach in comparison with traditional methods of assessment used within all other disciplines was surveyed in oral manner. The grades web pages visiting activity for «computer techologies in pharmacy» was 9.23 views per day, while the grades web pages visiting activity for «management and marketing in pharmacy» was lesser with 5.10 views per day. The higher visiting activity of «computer techologies in pharmacy» grades is due to the fact that final control of «computer techologies in pharmacy» was located inside the time frame of observation, while final control of «management and marketing in pharmacy» was located outside. The results has shown that, despite the need of additional teacher efforts, the game approach increases the interest of students in the discipline studying and creates an atmosphere of healthy competition between the participants of the educational process.
