THE EXPLANATION OF THE «NATIONAL IDENTITY» MEDIA CONCEPT IN THE DISCOURSE OF THE QUALITY NEWSPAPERS

Abstract

The article deals with the phenomenon of the national identity in its media projection, investigated within the framework of the conceptual analysis. The method of the analysis of the media concept includes the following types: etymological analysis; lexicographic analysis; the definition of the semantic relations with other related concepts; the identification of the key ideas based on the semantic field of the investigated concept; the analysis of the contexts in which the concept under study is functioning. The empirical material for the analysis of the «national identity» media concept includes the publications of the national quality newspapers, such as «The Mirror of the Week» and «The Day» for 2017, the criterion for selecting which was the fact of the presence of the concept stated. The total selection included 10 and 66 publications respectively. With the help of the conceptual analysis of the «national identity» media concept the powerful nation-building potential was discovered that can be proved by the functioning of the concept in the important worldview contexts related to language, solidarity, confessional affiliation of the Ukrainians, national process, etc. The media concept studied in this article is quite frequent and is at the penultimate stage of its lifecycle. «National identity» media concept can form a retrospective and perspective semantic field, invoking media references to historical facts and predictive constructs. The novelty of the research is determined by the need of studying the updated «national identity» media concept in the discourse of high-quality mass media, that influences the latest social processes in Ukraine. The materials and findings can be used as a knowledge background to such course as «Modern Media Concepts» as well as a guide for media practitioners who deal with the issues of ideological journalism.
