THE FIRST CRUSADE ACCORDING TO ALBERT OF AACHEN’S HISTORIA IEROSOLIMITANA

Abstract
The motto of the Holy War notion, ignited in Council of Clermont in 1095, was capturing the Holy Lands and helping local Christians by ruling out the Muslim dominance. The First Crusade was the most successful one among the campaigns launched for this motives. However, contemporary Islamic sources were rather inadequate on this subject. Therefore, it is so vital to study contemporary Latin sources. In this study of Albert of Aachen’s Historia Ierosolimitana, one of the most detailed and important narratives of the First Crusade, the Latin sources on the First Crusade has been briefly presented, and then Albertus's work has been studied in general terms. The first volume of Albert of Aachen’s work, which is consist of two volumes, begins with the call for the Holy War and ends on Crusader leaders’ returning their homes after the Battle of Ascalon. Since the Crusader activities in this period do not take place as much as necessary in the Islamic sources, it is vital to examine and evaluate the Western sources. As a result, it is understood that Albert of Aachen’s work contains extremely valuable information for a period that is lacking in both Islamic and Turkish history.
