THE FORMATION OF GROUNDWATER CHEMICAL COMPOSITION IN THE NOWA RUDA MINING AREA (“NOWA RUDA” COAL MINE)

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2010, Vol 440, Issue 440

Abstract

During underground extraction of raw materials, it is obligatory to drain the deposit, which causes a number of changes in the chemical composition of groundwater. Interpretation of processes forming the water chemistry in Carboniferous formations of the Lower Silesian Coal Basin was based on a chemical analysis of water flowing into the mining levels of +240, +140, +40, –110 and –260 in the Nowa Ruda mining area (“Piast” field) during the period of 1962–1974. In order to distinguish subpopulations of mine water, corresponding to different hydrochemical environments or groups of processes shaping their chemistry, the Piper diagram was applied. We also used the calculations of the percentage of major ions and selected hydrochemical indicators. Saturation Index (SI) values of the analyzed water of selectedmineral phases were calculated by the PHREEQC program.
