THE GERMAN PAST IN THE NOVEL «CRABWALK» BY G. GRASS

Abstract

The article analyzes the novel «Crabwalk» by the German writer G. Grass, published in 2002, which is dedicated to one of the taboo issue of German post-war history and literature – the tragic fate of the German refugees during the Second World War. The object of the investigation is the intergenerational transfer of memory of the National Socialist past in Germany. The aim of this study is to show how the trauma of the first generation of witnesses can be transmitted to the next generations of children and grandchildren. The article considers how the repressed memories of the «first generation» (communicative and individual memory) are transformed into a cultural and collective memory (A. Assmann). The distinction between different generations of witnesses shows how the contemporary Germans define their attitude to their own history. Oral, partial and subjective memories of the first generation (oral history) integrate in the cultural memory by the second generation in form of the written history. The third generation is a bearer of revanchist ideas, and presents the way of radical correction of history errors. The novel itself as a literary work presents a case of memory transmission, in which G. Grass’ hidden memories and omissions became a part of cultural memory.
