Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2014, Vol 7, Issue 33

Abstract

Turkey lags behind many countries in the world indexes of reading habits. To increase its place in these indices, there are a number of projects and practices going on in its educational institutions. Apart from these institutional efforts, among the practices with this goal, book adaptation movies are still being debated in terms of their controversial impacts on reading motivation. It’s suggested that especially the recent adaptations of literary classics to scenarios of modern context have at least created an awareness of reading. The aim of this research is to identify the impact of novel and story adaptation movies on reading motivation of middle school, high school and university students in the context of cinema-literature relations. The research universe consists of middle school, high school and university students in Turkey, while the sample is of 1693 students at middle schools, high schools and universities from 17 provinces, at least two provinces from each region to represent the research universe. For the research a survey with Cronbachα value of 0,873 has been developed and implemented by the researchers. To analyze the data Crosstab analysis has been used and frequency (n) and percentage values (%) have been presented. At the end of the research, it’s been found that book adaptation movies have an impact on students’ reading habits and they create an interest on the books, the authors of the books, and the other works of these authors.
