The inception of Empirical Legal Studies in the Russian legal thought

Abstract
This article confronts the widely recognized claim that the pioneers of empirical research in law are representatives of American and Scandinavian legal realism. Explorations of the Russian legal realists show that their studies arose much earlier and had a significant impact on the emergence and formation of the empirical direction of research in law. In support of this thesis, the text presents the basic methodological postulates of Leon Petrażycki and his followers, which are analyzed from two perspectives: methodological pluralism and empirical research. While discussing empirical research methods, apart from the concept of legal reality, research methods used by the representatives of Russian legal realists were presented.<br/><br/>
