The incidence and distribution of pathological fractures in giant cell tumours of bone—a retrospective study

Journal Title: Kerala Journal of Orthopaedics - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 0

Abstract

Giant cell tumour of bone (GCTB) is a benign but locally aggressive tumour of bone with specific predilection of age and location, composed of mononuclear stromal cells and multinucleated giant cells. Pain, swelling and pathological fractures are the common presenting features. This study focuses on finding the incidence and distribution of pathological fractures in GCTB. Our study shows, out of the 102 cases of GCTB treated from our institution during study period, 48 presented with pathological fracture. Elderly population most often presented with fractures. Knee joint was most commonly affected by pathological fracture followed by distal radius. There was significant association between the size of the lesion and incidence of pathological fracture (‘y’>0.5)
