The Influence of Age, Sex and Altitude on the Morphometry of Red Blood Cells in Dromedary Camel
Journal Title: Journal of Animal Science Advances - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
This study has been conducted in local dromedary camel (Chaambi breed) in two regions of different altitude in the South of Algeria (Biskra and El-Oued) in order to reveal the influence of age, sex and altitude on the morphometry of red blood cells. The result did not show any significant influence of age on the morphometry of red blood cells between the young and adult dromedary camels of the two regions. Indeed, sex did not have any influence on the morphometry of red blood cells between males and females dromedary camels. However, concerning the altitude, the study showed that the erythrocytes of the adult males dromedary camels of El-Oued region are significantly larger. Further studies for others breeds are highly recommended to show the exact effect of age, sex and altitude on red blood cells morphology.
