The influence of construction changes in javelin on the scores in 14–15 year old children throwing javelin

Abstract
In modern sport scientists excel in inventing ideas improving sport scores. Surprisingly, contrary to the vast number of technological possibilities, there occurred a discipline in which scores were deliberately lowered. It is the javelin throw. Following the excellent performance of Uwe Höhn (104.80 m), there emerged the requirement for limiting the range of the javelin throw. That’s why the International Association of Athletics Federations recommended that the javelin structure be changed, i.e. by shifting its centre of gravity. With these regulations in mind, we decided to examine the impact of the re-structured javelin on the scores in the 14–15-year-olds at the beginning of training. In the experiment each subject threw the javelin twice (old and new type) from a shortened run-up. Next, they underwent a monthly training to improve their throwing technique. After that period, they again performed throws under the same conditions with 600 g javelins. In both trials the best result was selected. The collected results demonstrate the throwing characteristics of the javelin types. The boys revealed a bigger difference in throws with the new type javelin – requiring more strength, whilst the girls showed higher results in the old type javelin throw, where the technique took over their strength.
