The Influence Of Education On Individual And Social Habits As Components Of Social Functioning: A Community-based Cross-sectional Study

Abstract
Aim: This study aims to investigate the effect of educational level on social functioning of people living in Turkish community. Methods: Social Functioning Questionnaire Form consisting of questions about individual and social habits that aims to assess participants’ demographic information and social functioning was applied to 635 people from all levels of education via convenient sampling. Results: Out of 635 people who completed the study, 35% were graduated from primary school, 30% from high school, and 44% from university. The mean age was 36 years, and mean monthly income of the participants was 4000 TL. In the group, 58% were married and 51% were males. In our study, social functioning is evaluated via six subheadings and it is observed that the increase in the level of education effects the social functioning. While self-care, participation in recreational activities, interpersonal relations, employment/professional life, and participation in social activities increase as the level of education increases, no significant correlation was found between independent living and the level of education when gender variable is controlled. Moreover, it is found that as the level of education decrease, the frequency of cleaning the living space and the duration of watching TV increase. Conclusion: Investigating the effects of education, which provides individual development and aims to guide people becoming independent individuals who play role in development process of society, on social functioning will be a guideline in planning the processes in societal development and applications.
