THE INFLUENCE OF ENERGY CONDITIONS OF A SURFACE LAYER ON THE WETTABILITY OF EN-AW AlMg2 ALUMINIUM ALLOY BY ACTIVE AND INACTIVE LUBRICATING MEDIUMS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 234, Issue 6

Abstract

The influence of energy conditions of an aluminium alloy surface layer on its wettability by surface active and non-active lubricating mediums is presented in this article. Energy conditions were estimated based on the analysis of free surface energy changes calculated (by ASTM D5946 method) upon static wetting angle measurement. Wettability was characterised by the observation of static wetting angle for three lubricating mediums: paraffin oil, Tranself EP oil (EP phosphorus-sulphur additives), and Total Azolla ZS100 oil (AW zinc alkyldithiophoshate additive). It was found that the increase of free surface energy influences the improvement of wettability of the aluminium surface by inactive (paraffin oil) and active (with AW/EP additives) lubricating mediums. The analysis of wettability by inactive lubricating medium based on dynamic wetting angle observation was also carried out.
