THE INFLUENCE OF MODEL SIMPLIFICATIONS ON THE PREDICTED PERFORMANCE OF HYDRODYNAMIC THRUST BEARINGS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 227, Issue 5

Abstract

Over last decades, a lot of analytical models were built dedicated to predicting the performance of thrust bearings through numerical calculations. They allow taking into account many phenomena and design features that are important for bearing properties, but still in many cases predicted bearing characteristics seem not accurate enough. In this paper, a comparison of the results of predicted performance for hydrodynamic thrust bearings with the use of different independently developed TEHD (thermo elasto hydrodynamic) bearing models was illustrated. The main differences between the models comprise assumptions taken for fluid flow in the model. Calculations were carried out for the same boundary conditions applied in both codes. Obtained results were compared in order to reveal differences in calculated bearing characteristics caused by different solutions of fluid flow in the model. Some selected results of simulations were additionally compared to experimental data available from published literature.
