Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 5

Abstract

Background. One of the main goals of every kind of school is to develop different skills in pupils and to organize extracurricular activities during leisure time. The aim of this study was to collect essential information, which would be useful to determine whether different types of schools satisfy the needs of youth, regarding different forms of extracurricular activities, helpful in developing various skills and hobbies.Material and methods. Subjects from Cracow junior high classes attending special needs school (mentally retarded pupils), integrated school (mentally retarded and normal pupils) and public school (normal pupils) participated in the study. The type of school was the factor differentiating the three groups of subjects. The total of 75 pupils including 45 boys and 31 girls were subjected to examination (average age 15,9±0,9). The study consisted in a survey using a questionnaire containing 30 questions.Results. The study results indicate that in all above mentioned schools, authentic activity of various hobby clubs, sports sections or handicraft studios can attract the youth and prompt them to perform leisure activities that would contribute to the development of individual pupils' skills.Conclusions. Although the majority of study subjects fully accept school, they also need different extracurricular activities. Intensification of the already existing activities may also be required as a remedy against passive, non demanding physical or intellectual forms of leisure activity in youth.
