The Intellectual Ties Between Stoist Philosophy and Modernity

Journal Title: İzmir Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2020, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Modernity establishes a distinct world view that rises above its unique set of principles and values, given its predecessor Christian cosmology and early civilizations. Here, especially notions such as individualism, natural law, and human rights come to the fore as projections of epistemological ties such as rationality, progress, scientific approach and empiricism to the political and social world. However, every transformation in world history has traces from previous intellectual paths. In this sense, Hellenism, which emerged following the dissolution of the holistic world view of Ancient Greece, remains a model that we can discuss some of these traces. Stoicism is an important school of thought in that Hellenistic tradition including its Roman extensions. Indeed, it is possible to find some links between Stoicism and modernity. The study from this perspective explains the relationship between the two, with the argument that there are epistemological and socio-political relations between modernity and Stoicism. In this context, with a comparative reading, the article deals with Stoicism, on the one hand, and identifies the proposed relationships on the other.
