THE ISSUE OF SOCIAL EXCLUSION AND THE NEED FOR MINIMUM INCOME SUPPORT

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 39

Abstract

The world is going through a structural change due to the increasing impact of the neo-liberal policies. The most significant problem of today’s modern societies stands out as the lack of societal integration rather than poverty. Social exclusion, therefore, has become a core issue. Below average living standards, and being excluded from common lifestyles, traditions and activities have led specific segments of the society to be gradually diverge from the society. Reasons such as unemployment, increasing number of long-term unemployment, broken homes becoming commonplace, demographic structure of the population, unfair migration and income distribution had an impact on the differences in terms of integration with the society. The ongoing changes in societal life have led to the need to develop rather modern programs such as minimum income support as part of the social integration leaving the traditional protection methods behind in terms of prevention of the poverty. This study, thus, opens the discussion of minimum income support in the light of this necessity.
