The Jews of Izmir From Past to Present: Settlement, Institutional Process and Current Status

Abstract
History of the Jews in Izmir and around is based on BC. In the early years of milestone, St. Paul, in the effort to spread Christianity, has aimed Jews around Izmir to Christianize and established seven churches in this context. Jews, exiled from the Iberian peninsula in 1492 and 1497, have continued religious and commercial activities freely under the protection of the Ottoman Empire and raised to key points in the state administration. Jews have created their own institutions in Izmir as of this date. Jewish population was approximately 15,000 in the city center of Izmir in 1893 and there were nearly 50 synagogues. Their population was down to 2,500 after immigrating to Europe and the United States at the beginning of the 20th century and to the Israel in 1948. Today, approximately 1300 Jews live in Izmir. In Izmir there are Bet Israel, Biker Holim, Siniora Giveret’s synagogues, as well as a hospital, numerous foundations and charities. In this article, we will try to put forward an overall snapshot of the Izmir Jews from past to present.
