THE KALEIDOSCOPIC STRUCTURE OF COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGES IN TURKEY DURING THE GLOBALISATION PROCESS: AN ESSAY OF THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 41

Abstract

Globalisation causes increased trade integration which brings along globalization of production and investment and technological development spreading rapidly. The Kaleidoscopic Comparative Advantages Hypotheses advocates that those developments bring countries’ costs close to one another in international trade and cause a quick changing, volatile structure in comparative advantages; that is to say make them kaleidoscopic. The study aims to investigate whether the comparative advantages of Turkish Manufacturing Industry sub-sectors are kaleidoscopic(volatile) or not. In this context, the specialization degree of sub-sectors through competitive power is calculated by means of ‘Trade Specialization Index’. In the end the data shows that during 1980-2013, comparative advantages in most of the manufacturing industry sub-sectors have a fluctuating course, showing they have a kaleidoscopic structure. As a matter of fact, in the study, results supporting the ideas defended in the Kaleidoscopic Comparative Advantages Hypotheses are obtained.
