The level of emotional intelligence in fifth-yearstudents of dentistry

Abstract
Introduction: Emotional intelligence is definedbySalovey, Mayer and Sluyter as a cognitive ability which involves knowing and controlling one’s own emotions, recognizing the emotions of others, being able to motivate others and also having the ability to initiate and maintain contact with other people. A dental practitioner should have the ability to manage the whole medical team, and to co-operate with it.Aim of the study: To analyze the level of emotional intelligence in a group of 90 students (67 women, 23 men) in the 5th year of their studies at Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University in Cracow. Material and methods: The research strategy was based on the Questionnaire of Emotional Intelligence(INTE) adapted for the Polish context.Conclusion: The analysis of the results concerning the level of emotional intelligence of the 5th-year dental students suggests that there is a need to implement into the syllabus a facultative course with a view to improving the level of competence in the fieldofemotionalintelligence.
