Journal Title: Rehabilitacja Medyczna - Year 2015, Vol 19, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of the study was to compare the effects of manual therapy and a standard treatment on the health-related quality of life in patients with chronic migraine pain.Material and methods: Two groups diagnosed with migraines were examined: (1) patients treated with manual therapy (the experimental group); and (2) patients treated with a typical pharmacotherapy (the control group). Each group comprised 30 persons. In Group 1, Ten treatment sessions were conducted within 13 days. The change in the patients’ health-related quality of life was measured using the WHOQOL 100 questionnaire. The measurements were performed three times: before the treatment; directly after the treatment; and three months after the treatment. Results: The group treated with manual therapy showed an increased health-related quality of life. This effect continued for three months after the treatment. In addition, the effectiveness of manual therapy in terms of the state of health of the patients with migraines was found to be superior to the effectiveness of the typical pharmacotherapy, both directly and three months after the treatment. Conclusions: Manual therapy increases the health-related quality of life in patients with migraines. The beneficial effects of manual therapy on the health-related quality of life are superior to the effects of pharmacotherapy.
