The map-use research focused on Map-Reading, Map-Using, and Map-Generating tasks
Journal Title: Revista Brasileira de Cartografia - Year 2019, Vol 71, Issue 2
Abstract
This paper presents a conceptual and epistemological review about the mapuse research, focusing on the map-reading tasks. We have discussed the theoretical connections needed to stablish the Cartography as science, based on the development of the map-use research. We have written this review based on researches developed under the functional approach, specifically those concerned to investigate the “map-reading tasks”. We have considered the Map-Reading Tasks as those elementary subjects, which allowed cartographers to understand the map-use process, as well as, to improve the cartographic communication. Therefore, while building the chronological and conceptual connections between the researches on “map-use”, we have explained the cartographic epistemological development, as it was founded as a field of knowledge. Finally, we have also discussed the critical changes on the map-use research, caused by the technological developments occurred in the last two decades. Thereby, at the end of this review we have proposed the expression “map-using, and map-generating tasks” as a complementary term to the old way of interacting with maps, delimited by the expression "map reading tasks".
Influence of the density of vertices on the Hausdorff Distance and Vertex Influence methods
Using linear features for cartographic quality control is advantageous because they represent the majority of the data in a cartographic base and are spatially well distributed over it. However, the application of some l...
Mapping the evacuation vulnerability in case of natural disasters employing the space syntax
In case of Natural Disasters, one of the ways of reducing human loss during the occurrence of this phenomenon is performing an evacuation of people. The evacuation consists in removing people from their housing to a plac...
ASTER GDEM Altimetric Correction Through the Error Compensation Surface Method
The aim of the this paper is to evaluate and compare the use of error compensation surfaces generated by deterministic and geostatistical interpolations to increase the vertical accuracy of the DEMs from ASTER GDEM for R...
Implementation of an on-line system for GNSS data processing
The processing of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data by scientific software is a growing need in Space Geodesy studies. However, deal with these, in general, is not always an easy task. Thereby, a system that...
Mass Evaluation of Rural Buildings Through Classical Regression and Geostatistics
The concept of Rural Territorial Tax (ITR) is rooted in subjective methods that turn this tribute inefficient and inconsistent with their original purposes. Thus, this work had the objective to evaluate the hypotheses th...
