The Molecular Mechanisms of Magnesium Neuroprotection in Patients with Eclampsia: A Short Review
Journal Title: Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research - Year 2015, Vol 6, Issue 6
Abstract
Eclampsia has been studied extensively over the last decades. Several pathophysiological mechanisms and animal models have been proposed for the disease. However, to date, none of them can fully explain the neuronal pathophysiology of eclamptic convulsions and the associated deleterious complications. Magnesium is the drug of choice for the prophylaxis and treatment of eclampsia in addition to prompt delivery. There is evidence to suggest that the beneficial effect of magnesium is exerted via modulation of the N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor (NMDAR). The aim of this review is to explore the molecular mechanism by which magnesium exerts its neuroprotective effect and prevents eclamptic convulsions through the NMDAR activation pathway. Future investigations and alternative treatments are discussed.

Assessing the Influence of Clinic-based Health Education on Pregnant Women's Utilization of Primary Health Care Services in Ogun State
Aims: The paper assessed the influence of clinic-based health education (C-BHE) on pregnant women’s attitude in relation to birth preparedness, complication and readiness (BP/CR) and utilization of Primary Health Care (P...
Comparison between PCR– based Single Tube Genotyping of Sickle Cell Disease and Alkaline Haemoglobin Electrophoresis
Background: Sickling test and haemoglobin solubility test are screening techniques used to detect the presence of haemoglobin S, but can't identify exact phenotype or genotype. Haemoglobin electrophoresis can determine t...
Biology of Tooth Movement
Research in the field of cellular and molecular biology is relatively lagging in comparison to mechanical advances in the field of orthodontics. Even though the mechanical advances are used quite carefully during orthodo...
Loss of Autonomic Nervous System Control of Blood Pressure in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) manifests with motor symptoms of tremor, bradykinesia, muscle rigidity and postural instability. However, various nonmotor symptoms (NMS) have recently been recognized, among which autonomic dysf...
Gender Related Differences in the Prevalence and Correlates of Modifiable Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors among Seemingly Healthy Adult Nigerians–A Cross Sectional Study
Background: Mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is on the increase globally and the presence of multiple CVD risk factors is related to poor CVD outcomes. Most studies in Nigeria described the prevalence of CVD...
