The Morphometric Analysis of Yakacık River Basin (Hatay)
Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 58, Issue 1
Abstract
This study aims to determine the basin morphological features with the help of digital elevation models by using of Geographic Information Systems. Morphometric analyses include the linear, spatial properties of the relief of the basin. Yakacık River basin (Hatay) is chosen as the field of study. Digital elevation model obtained from 1/ 25.000 scaled digital topographic maps was used for determining the basin’s morphometric characteristics, and all of the morphometric analyses and calculations of indices were performed using Geographic Information Systems on ArcGIS 10.2 software automatically. In this context, the characteristic features of the basin, the basin boundary, area, perimeter, flow directions, drainage networks, slope and aspect were determined. This study introduces some approaches that involve the use of digital elevation model created with the help of GIS for a quick and easy way of determining the basin boundary and its morphological properties which are time consuming and difficult to determine on the digital topographic map by means of conventional methods.
