THE OBJECT OF EVALUATION IN APPROVAL, PRAISE, COMPLIMENT AND FLATTERY SPEECH ACTS

Abstract
The object of the analysis is approval, praise, compliment and flattery positive evaluative speech acts, which have been investigated on the samples of Modern English artistic discourse. The article reports on the approval, praise, compliment and flattery speech acts main and secondary illocutionary aims. A positive evaluative utterance addresser is motivated by a desire to express his positive evaluative attitude to the evaluation object and to demonstrate understanding, solidarity, support to the interlocutor. The article also focuses on the evaluation object in approval, praise, compliment and flattery speech acts, that have been investigated in English artistic discourse. The investigation has proved that inanimate objects qualities serve as approval speech act objects. A person’s appearance peculiarities are discussed both in compliment and flattery speech acts, and also in certain praise contexts. A person’s intellectual and moral traits and his/her actions are the topics in praise and flattery speech acts. A person’s achievements serve as the object of evaluation in compliment and flattery speech acts.
