The Onset of Osteogenesis in the Limbs of the Grey Breasted Guinea Fowl (Nunida Meleagiris Galeata) Embryo

Journal Title: Journal of Animal Production Advances - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 10

Abstract

One hundred and fifty (150) fresh fertilized guinea fowl eggs were used for this study. The eggs were incubated and the developing embryos were subjected to Alizarin reds staining technique commonly used for osteogenesis study. The result revealed that osteogenesis started at the diaphyses of the long bones of the wing and the leg by day 12 of incubation. No ossification centres were observed at the epiphyses of all the long bones, carpals, digit II metacarpal, digit IV phalanx of the wing as well as the tarsals and patella of the leg. The phalangeal bones of digit II of the wing were the last to get ossified at day 19 and 22 of incubation respectively. The pubis was the last to get ossified in the leg by day 19 of incubation. From the foregoing it was observed that the appearance of ossification centres in the wing took 10 out of the 28 days of incubation to be completed while it took just 7 days to be completed in the leg.
