The Opinions of Teachers and Parents on Values and Values Education in Primary Religion and Ethics Course -Diyarbakir Sample-

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the opinions of teachers and parents on values education in religion and morals courses studied in 4th to 8th grade syllabi. Values affect human behavior directly or indirectly. The school is to show respect to the values of the society while having also interaction therewith. Thus, the present study, being a case study based on the perceptions of the teachers and parents, is conducted. The sample of the study consists of 164 religion and morals teachers and 512 parents in Diyarbakır. Teacher and parent questionnaires are utilized in data collection. The questionnaires aimed to measure the perceived importance of values in 4th to 8th grade syllabi of religion and morals course by teachers and parents. The results of the survey revealed that teachers perceive "honesty", "justice" and "correctness" as high ranking values whereas the parents perceive "honesty", "justice" and "respect" as foremost ones. In conclusion, the perceptions of teachers and parents are in congruence.
