THE ORIENTAL MENTALITIES OF THE WALLACHIAN BOYARS DURING THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY

Abstract

The remarks of the foreign travelers and the chronicles about the huge assets of the great boyars often spoke of the luxury and wealth of their noble palaces, the expensive furniture and silverware, the clothes, the high priced tools, some exceeding the value of the estates. Finally, the access to culture was widened – the printed and handwritten texts were growing, many churches were founded – proving, beyond the existence of increased material availabilities, the act of will encapsulated by their mentality. The mentality represents the joint impression and the way of thinking of a certain nation, or social collectivity. Any society has a specific mentality that it has been inherited and it is popularized further, being changed, or not, by the contemporary influences. The bribe and the baksheesh are only a few oriental habits which we embraced during the seventeenth century. The transformation of the morals and manners was achieved while the Ottoman domination amplified. The Wallachian boyars chose the oriental habits, clothes, furniture, food, the way they spent their spare time and all the aspects related to their daily life. The moral environment of the Orient (the Ottoman Empire), defined by indifference, idleness and corruption influenced the moral horizon of the Wallachian boyars. Beside the family origin, blood relations, personal qualities, occupied dignities, raised foundations, the mentality had also an important role in determining the position and prestige of a great boyar within the society.
