The Peasant Party of Bessarabia and the rivalry between Pantelimon Halippa and Ion Inculet

Journal Title: Codrul Cosminului - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 2

Abstract

The effervescence of the national movement in Bessarabia in 1917 brought to the fore the question of political organization. Because previously there were no political parties in the real political way and being animated by the same purpose, the leaders of this movement formed the National Moldovan Party. Halippa was prominent among political representatives who contributed to the solidification of political life in Bessarabia, being a founding member of the Moldovan National Party, later transformed into the Bessarabian Peasant Party, whose president has been throughout its existence (1918-1926). The study highlights the role of Halippa in the Bessarabian Peasant Party and his contribution to the merge with the Peasant Party in the Old Kingdom. The ideological political divergences between Halippa and Inculet and especially the vision/ perspective on the future fate of the party marked the organization. Bessarabian Peasant Party’s integration in the Romanian political system was the result of natural processes of the Union and of the complex movement that lead to the united Romania and establishing a unified peasant party meant a breakthrough for Romanian political life.
