The peculiarities of archaeological textile materials and the methods of their attribution
Journal Title: Поволжская Археология - Year 2015, Vol 3, Issue 13
Abstract
The main peculiarities of textile materials, discovered in different archaeological sites under differing conditions of archaeological transformation are considered in the article. A number of examples serve to demonstrate the way the specific subsurface keeping conditions modify the characteristics of textile fabrics. All this should be taken into account in the process of fabric attribution, restoration and further keeping. As a rule, modern researchers, with the exception of experts, are not quite familiar with ancient textile fabrics; hence special care is needed while determining artefact types and technological characteristics. The article analyzes ancient textile fabrics attribution methods based upon detailed description of technological characteristics and comparison of fabric specific features with available descriptions from specialized catalogues or museum collections, as well as with data from ethnographical studies and written sources.
