THE PENALTY AND LAGRANGE MULTIPLIER METHODS IN THE FRICTIONAL 3D BEAM-TO-BEAM CONTACT PROBLEM
Journal Title: Civil and Environmental Engineering Reports - Year 2005, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
This paper is concerned with the frictional contact between beams. The purpose is to compare the results obtained by the penalty and Lagrange multiplier methods. The advantages and disadvantages of both methods are generally known and widely discussed but not in the quantitative manner and not specifically for the problem of beam-to-beam contact. The paper sketches briefly both formulations pointing out the main differences and features of both methods. The section with examples presents several cases of analysed beam-to-beam contact scenarios. The accuracy of results is taken into account, also the comparison to the full 3D analysis performed using the program ABAQUS is made. The computation times and the length of the codes for both methods are compared as well. These criteria allow one to conclude that for the beam-to-beam contact problem the Lagrange multiplier method is more attractive than the penalty method.

Hydromorphological river assessment of degraded land in the region of open cast mines
River and floodplains form one of the most valuable elements of the surrounding landscape. Over the centuries, anthropogenic impacts have led to numerous transformations of river ecosystem. Following this study, river be...
ULTRASONIC INTENSIFICATION OF AEROBIC STABILIZATION OF SEWAGE SLUDGE
The aerobic stabilization of excess sewage sludge using low frequency ultrasound (25kHz) was investigated. The mechanically thickened excess sludge was obtained from full-scale wastewater treatment plants. The samples of...
MONITORING OF LANDSLIDE AREAS WITH THE USE OF CONTEMPORARY METHODS OF MEASURING AND MAPPING
In recent years, there is an increase of landslide risk observed, which is associated with intensive anthropogenic activities and extreme weather conditions. Appropriate monitoring and proper development of measurements...
Impact of ultrasonic field strength on the structural changes of disintegrated excess sludge
Exposure of sludge to the ultrasonic field as a disintegrating factor before the mesophilic anaerobic stabilisation directly affects the increase in the susceptibility of sludge on the biochemical process of decompositio...
