The Physics of Inflation: Newton’s Law of Cooling and the Consumer Price Index
Journal Title: Journal of Applied Quantitative Methods - Year 2010, Vol 5, Issue 1
Abstract
In recent years, physicists have been using tools from physics to study social phenomena, an area of study sometimes called sociophysics and econophysics. Most of this work has appeared in physics journals, and the present paper is an attempt to bring this type of work to a largely social science audience. The focus is on the application of a differential equation model, widely used in physics, to the study of the long term trend in changes in the United States’ price level. This model is found to provide an excellent fit to the data, indicating that this trend is an exponential growth trend.

Implementation and Applications of a Three-Round User Strategy for Improved Principal Axis Minimization
This paper presents a three-round user strategy (EPM), extending the C implementation of Brent’s PRAXIS algorithm by Gegenfurtner. In a first round, EPM applies a multistart procedure for global optimization, randomly ge...
Implementing a GIS application for Network Management
The paper proposes a network management system architecture based on a geographical information system that allows accurate description and inventorying of the infrastructure. The system contains several models that emul...
Online Hoeffding Bound Algorithm for Segmenting Time Series Stream Data
In this paper we introduce the ISW (Interval Sliding Window) algorithm, which is applicable to numerical time series data streams and uses as input the combined Hoeffding bound confidence level parameter rather than the...
Nick EMMEL: Sampling and Choosing Cases in Qualitative Research. A realist approach
Nick Emmel’s book, Sampling and Choosing Cases in Qualitative Research. A realist approach, stresses and lightens an important issue in qualitative research conducted in social sciences: sampling or choosing cases.
Research on Elaboration and Testing of an Integrated System Based on XML Data Analysis
This paper approaches the importance of XML for better organizing and managing plain text data. This document provides the architecture and testing plan for a data model describing organization metadata as a collection o...
