The preparation of nurses to coping with cancer patients care problems

Abstract

Aim. The aim of this study was to assess how well are the nurses dealing with the most frequent care problems prepared to do so. Material and methods. Some 102 nurses working in two hospitals and one hospice in Lublin, participated in the study which used a questionnaire of the authors’ own making. Results. The most common physical care problems among oncological patients include: nausea and vomiting (50%), alteration of bowel habits - diarrhea, constipation (56.9%), dyspnea (53.9%), weight loss (58.8%), pains (50%), fatigue (53.9%) and self-care difficulties (51%). Most nurses participating in the study think that they are well-prepared for dealing with the care problems in oncology patients. The majority of respondents expressed the opinion that the specialization (61.8%) is the best kind of education which has prepared to oncological patients care. According to 97.1% of the researched subjects, their religious faith has helped them in coping with these difficulties. Conclusions. Nurses think that they are well prepared to coping with oncological patients care problems. The best kind of education which has prepared them to taking care of cancer patients is completing a specialization. Most interviewees expressed the opinion that the faith has helped them to coping with care difficulties.
